The Doors. Best band ever. No argument. Fuck Led Zep hipsters. Fuck hipsters. I hate subcultures based on consumerism. Fuck that. Music Theory time. Lets talk about power chords. The perfect fifth. E5. This is one of the worlds most boring harmonic devices. Also, when playing the ii powerchord try using a flat fifth to stay within your key. Example. Play these E5 B5 A5 G5 F#b5. Or try sixths! Have fun. When you write a riff that involves powerchords, try to experiment. Maybe use 6ths, inverted powerchords, fourths, 3rds. Don't just Green Day it. Good riffage deserves good harmonic support. The perfect 5th does have its place, and probably should be the most common diad, but give the other's a chance.

yesterday i got a voicemail message from my dad. he calls me at work a lot, from germany. he rambled a little bit about nothing. mostly about having to leave me a voicemail message at work. i am pretty sure that whenever he calls me, it is after he has had a few drinks, because by that time it is late evening in germany. he calls them ‘night-caps’. anyway, before hanging up he says, ‘sorry for hitting you when you were young, parents do crazy things.' my dad is SUCH a freak. he cuffed me once, and not hard at all. we were arguing in the car. it was during my ‘difficult’ phase. (uh, phase?) i was being an asshole and totally deserved it. it was nothing. i was always embarrassed by my father. he has this way of saying things that comes off as inappropriate and exaggerated. so, there i am at 10 years old, rolling my eyes and having to explain ‘the joke’ to the other parents/teachers who just don’t get it. i’m not even sure what he does in germany. only that he lives on an organic farm, works all the time, and plays his mandocello in the pubs at night. he says the radio programming over there is really bad. they play mostly older american ‘hits.' and there isn’t a lot of live music so they really eat up his tunes. i can never tell how much of what my father tells me are delusions of grandeur. gotta give him some credit ('in the straight world') though. a lot of people do tend to like him. especially young people. when i was 14 i told him i wanted to play guitar so he bought me two. despite his opinion that there are too many guitar players in the world and why don’t i choose something more interesting. why don’t i play the mandocello, right dad? i remember when he decided to start playing the accordion. he would use it to wake me up for school. at least he wrote a song for me when i was a tike. so did my mom, actually.

Injury Report August 13

Hey folks. Generals Gathered is playing our final shows, The Womb at Kilroy's August 15 and Fundraiser For Sam at Disgraceland August 24. We will be recording at Six Stix Studios (Derek Kenny/Dave Koski) on August 22nd. Our album is tentatively called Metalavalanche. Our tracklist will contain such hits as "This Riff is Heavier than a Frozen Ocean" and "The Apocalyptic Suite: War, Pestilence, Famine and Death". Our songs got long names. Hail Satan. I recommend Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock and Victor Wooten. I'm feeling some jazz and funk recently. Lets talk theory. The harmonic Minor is regular minor(1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7) with a sharp 7 (1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7). It can be a blast to mess around especially when used for harmony rather than melody. Play these chords (Am G F Dm Em Am). Now play these (Am G F Dm E Am) Note the difference. Good luck.

the cramps.

PMS is actually less common than the common man would think. they've done studies that had women tracking their symptoms/moods/general well-being from day to day in diaries. when compared with their actual cycles, correlations between the two were few and far between. ofcourse there are flaws in any study. and this is certainly more along the vein of anecdotal evidence. but could you really do it any other way? my answer is that people are moody. and they feel crappy. more likely due to shoddy diets than premenstural symptoms. today i feel like 'goodsister/badsister' ('better burn that dress, sister...). i'll be the biggest dick, and all that riotgrrl style. except that 'pretty on the inside' did not come out of olympia. did not start as a political zine. and did not 'fuck thesame' as ms hannah's 'pussy whipped'. so i guess what i'm saying is that, just like the actually ellusive PMS, riot grrl is also far less common than one would think. girls are angry all over the world without having any other lick in common. kate moss is angry. britney too. why does this matter? it doesn't. just passes the time til i pass out. cramping.

I'm not entirely angry today. I read The Pirate's Dilemma. Great book. Compares punk to free running, file sharing, open source development, and a bunch of other stuff. It is free. Go download it PDF. I recommend Rancid. Maxwell Murder has great bass playing. I also recommend Testament. They rock. Let's talk theory. Alternate tuning. I've been messing with Dm7 tuning, DADFCD. Go try it, it will break you out of playing the same blues pentatonic riffs. Open tunings are like a safety net. I can always hit the notes of a Dm7 chord by playing all open stings. Go mess around.

Injury Report July 30 (late)

Medio-core. Soda Cra-core. Tired of it. I'm tired of hearing about it, listening to it, and it makes me want to CURL UP AND DIE. It is musics DARKEST HOUR and pushes no boundries. Strip away the derivative bands and ALL THAT REMAINS are seemingly well place influences, thash, melodic death, NYhardcore, but when 36 CRAZYFISTS keep this one-track mentality I want to jump FROM A SECOND STORY WINDOW. I don't want to be the ANTAGONIST, but these metal-lite bands will be AVENGED SEVENFOLD. I shout "KILLSWITCH ENGAGED" until we DESTORY THE RUNNER. We all know it is the OPIATE FOR THE MASSES and when the SHADOWS FALL, true metal will survive the AFTERSHOCK, the ALL OUT WAR, THE AMERICAN TRAGEDY, the CAVE IN, the LIFERUINER and the LAMB OF GOD. Blow me. I recommend Depeche Mode and Entombed for rocking good times. Lets talk tritones. The augmented fourth, the flatted fifth. Sounds like hell. sounds like sex. Play it loud, for you would not be around had Iommi not messed with it. It is celebrated in YYZ, 43% Burnt, and our own ELEMENTS by JeanPaulDeRoover.

excuse me, mister.

regular exercise is part of a healthy, pro-active lifestyle. old news. but this is why i walk to and from work every day and hit the gym at least 3 times a week. without music i would not be able to keep up this routine. music is ESSENTIAL to maintaining motivation. without it i'd be a deadbeat 7 days a week instead of... 3/4. last night i plugged into: the tommy movie soundtrack, alice in chains, pjam, FNM ('crack hitler'), slayer (old), mr. bungle.. to name only a few. i have no idea what most people listen to while workin it. for all i know, the girl next to me could be learning spanish. i suspect that 'dance jams' could be a popular hit? whatever works. the closest i come to really dancy is peeping tom (highly recommended for pushin weight, btw). last night my routine was rudely interrupted by the dude on the treadmill infront of me. working out requires a lot of pushing and pulling, bending over in skimpy-ish clothing. sweating it all out. adjusting equipment can give anyone interested a pretty prime view.. i GUESS. fellas, there is a time and place to be checking out chicks. i find it incredibly immature, inconsiderate, and irritating to be doin my thing, getting in the zone [insert lingo ofchoice here], etc. and have some dickweed clearly giving me the ONCE over 5 ZILLION times in the span of an hour. and no, i don't 'secretly like it'. firstly, you are too short for anybody, nevermind my amazonian ass. second: it doesn't matter WHO you are, or what your pathetic inches. this kind of behaviour doesn't get me 'hot.' and it's dangerous to boot! adrenaline surges will get you punched in your smug dickface. furthermore, if you MUST check us out, at least try not to be obvious. who do you think you are? looking back every 2 minutes, pausing as you walk behind me- yes there are mirrors yes i can see. this kind of man should be sentenced to blinders for life. i remember when i was younger, going to the complex with my best girlfriend and her mommy. mom worked at the LPH: 'the complex is the number one hangout for sex offenders,' she told us. not 5 seconds before i'd had some old dude attempt teach my how to maximize my pecs. fuggen UGHHHH.

i've been a blogger for a long time. mostly LiveJournal. my not-so-secret shame. interweb? neverheardofit. decided i'd give this one a try. though i may just return to old faithful and my best internet friends. i know a dude who is moving to NY to become a 'professional blogger'. i asked him why he couldn't just write from home. after all, we ARE ALL connected. fuggen void. he told me to forget grad school. it is time to WRITE. 'i've been hiding in my room with spiral notebooks since i was 12yearsold!' uh yeah. so have we all. another reason to move: new jewish girlfriend. kosher food is calling. and i GET that, i really do. but you can find nice jewish girls in tbay. (here's looking at yours truly.) last week, between friendly beers, he allowed me to pick a tune on the ipod. only to switch it off halfway through 'i against i' saying: 'i'm just not in the mood to rock out sorry.' what followed was a procession of gangsta 'pop' rap.

Injury Report July 23

Metalcore and ignorance seem to go hand in hand. Many bands influences don't go farther back than the last two AS I LAY DYING albums. Many bands also hate the name of their style of music. "We're not metalcore, we're metal". When I ask for more specifics, they decline, saying they are only metal. The sad part is that "heavy metal" tends to refer to either early proto stuff like Deep Purple, or hair bands. Many bands play metalcore with true integrity and originality. The crossover thrash bands, Dillinger, and the like, but I get the sense that 5 years ago, most bands playing metalcore would have a rapper in them; 5 years before that, plaid; 5 years before that, hairspray. Metalcore can be a viable genre, but it is perverted by MTV and MTV controlled people. Also, just to clear this up with some people, playing really heavy metalcore does not make you death metal. neither does 'pig squeals'. Damn kids. I recommend REM, and Behold... The Arctopus. I'm not even going to bother to tell you why, just listen. Music theory time. Which coincidentally is Bottom Rockers time. I hope they don't mind me spouting their songwriting secrets. The name of the game today is chord recognition. You should be able to take a simple song in a minor scale, and play it, solely because you know what chords (i ii III...) are being played. Lets take their international hit DUSK CHORUS. We all know the bass line. i---v---VI---iv---VI---iv---v-iv-III-ii-i. Try this in any key, especially after listening to the song. I'm not sure what key they play it in, but perfect pitch isn't important in my world. Lets try BITCH YOU GOT BIG TITS. Another decending minor riff. i---VII-VI-v-------III---vi-III-i------. Go home and do some of this yourself. I recommend We're Not Gonna Take It for its decending major riff. Knights of Cydonia for some Dorian work. Natural Process' Lyons Canvas for the chord progression and the guitar lead, Child In Time if you really wanna get adventurous. Remember, the important part isn't listening to a pitch five times and copying it on guitar, the important part is the roman numerals. That is a vey important key for untangling all of music.

Injury Report July 16

What is metal. Do you consider early protometal metal? Where do you draw the line? Sabbath, Maiden, Priest, Stooges, Blue Cheer? What about Nu Metal? Have we matured enough to realize that there are some redeeming qualities there? RATM and early System of a Down. Hair Metal? Some of it must be considered metal. Early Crue perhaps? We know that the guitar is really really strong in hair metal (sometimes). What about metalcore? In 10 years will we find some redeeming qualities in there? All the trends seem to have something good about them. Hair metal, grunge, etc all have something worth talking about. Maybe in 10 years we (the general metal community) will rediscover Nu Metal, Metalcore, Deathcore, Symphonic Black Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Stoner Rock styled Doom Metal and other FAKE genres and dig out some good bands? Recommendations - Nirvana. Anything but Nevermind. Hermano - the least celebrated of Kyuss' children. Music theory time. Let's talk about scales and math. We all know the Ionian scale. And there are 12 of them. There are also 7 modes, making 84 scales. Harmonic minor is Aolian with a major 7, which can also have 7 modes. we now have 168 scales. Melodic minor is Aolian with sharp 6 and 7. We now have 336 scales. Lets add the Major Blues Scales (12) and Minor (12 again) for a grand total of 360. Whole Tone (12) and Chromatic (12), Double Harmonic Minor (which won't modulate very well, so 12). We now have 384 extremely common and usable scales. Who says music theory is limiting? Every song written can be explained in terms of these scales. The Chromatic Scale of course can do this, but I think unless a passage is obviously Chromatic, the remaining 372 can. Even East Indian Classical music can be displayed on a Grand Staff. All that talk of microtonality really is about grace notes and sliding. The only exception to the rules are Modern Classical music. The microtonal stuff in there is rreally noise for the sake of being arty, which is an oppinion I stand by.

July 12th - Bah Bah Black Sheep.

This is my first blog on here, having registered this thing about a month ago and totally forgetting it existed I figured I would dust this thing off and get this shit rolling. Today I'm going to talk about elitism in black metal and how big of a ironic hypocritical fucking joke it is. First off we have music which is centered mostly around the ideology of individual strength, discovering the world for yourself and creating your own moral disposition and understanding of the things around you. It is often linked to satanism because of the strong similarities between ideologies. Some relate their beliefs in similarity towards the Nietzsche perspective of not picking any sides. Now those two largely being the lyrical/philosophical foundation to most black metal is it not hypocritical to try and stake a claim that you must conform to certain standards to fit into the genre at hand? I'm sick of all that "KVLT" or "TRVE" fucking bullshit. The people who think black metal died in 93 are nothing but a sad pathetic leach killing the spirit of which the music was first formed and opposing the very thing of which they uphold so dear. This irony is very similar to the retards who support Anarchy, but I'm going to save that rant for another day. You aren't Satan you fucking tired looking homo's stop dancing around in corpse paint pretending your evil.

Late Injury Report for July 9

Being sick sucks. I've been sick since my last day of school. It makes life much less fun. I hate being unemployed too. Shit. I recommend Ween. After DRD posted a thread a while ago about them, I did some research. They are interesting stuff. I'd also like to recommend Orange Goblin. Stoner Rock and Doom Metal to the nth degree. Wonderful band. Let's talk some music. Suspended chords. We all know our major chords, e major being E G# B. E suspended fourth "suspends the 3rd (G#) to create E A B. Since the A is a semitone away from a consonant chord, it "wants" to lean to G# to complete the E chord. Lets try an example. Get an instrument. We all know that the 5th leads to the tonic, right? That was in a previous Injury Report. Play G7, Csus4, C. Listen to the transitions between the chords. The other interesting quality of the suspended chord is that it changes the 3rd to a 2nd or 4th, eliminating the 3rd. This create ambiguity. A Dsus2 can lead to D or Dminor just the same. Yet another trivial quality is that a sus 2 chord can be rearranged to create a sus 4 chord. Bsus4 (B E F#) has the same notes as E sus 2 (E F# B). Have fun messing around with these, like The Who does in the intro to Pinball Wizard.

July 3 Injury Report

I don't got too much to rant and rave about today. I'm sick as balls, my drummer is out of town (can't jam) and I still don't have a job. Feelin' shitty. I'm going to recommend some shit KT Tunstall - Brilliant stuff, mostly about black horses and cherry trees Beastie Boys - not for their rap, everyone knows thats awesome, but for their punk music Time for a lesson. consonance. Octaves are very consonant, while minor seconds aren't. After a dissonance, the ear wants to hear resolution Lets play a C chord then a G7 then a C. During the G7, there is a tritone (e to b) which is disonant. the F wants to be a e as perfect fourths want to be major 3rds. the b wants to be a c, as major 7s wanna be tonics. the d isn't too bad, could go to c or e, and the g stays. This pushing feeling is called tension. The g7 has the most tension in the key of c, that is, it has the strongest desire to return to C chord. Another example is in the black sabbath song the wizard. The main riff (not the harmonica one, but the verse riff), AA _ _ Bb AA. The key is A, and the Bb is the minor second. by the time the second batch of A's comes along, the ear is very ready for them after hearing the dissonant Bb. That is all.

Injury Report (late) June 25

Hey retards. No one reads this so I feel the need to insult the reader as much as possible. Your families face sucks reader. Moving on. I just graduated, did all the formalities, exams, dances (2) parties... I have a massive cold, coughing every breath with a throat that feels like Iraq (dry, sandy, and bombed by the united states). The graduation festivities, plus my recent out of town escapades, fucked me over. I'm hurtin. I'm going to the doctor on Monday, so hopefully he tells me to stop wasting his time and get some rest. I have a horrible fear of hospitals. This stem from an unanesthesised surgury. Finger. Hurt like hell, in fact, it hurt enough to stop all speech and communication. I also have a phobia of nachos (true) which was semicured by ROTM (semitrue). Lets talk about voicings. There are many many G major chords, requiring a minimum of 3 notes, an an unlimited ceiling. That last sentence is only partly true. Hitting every G,B, and D audible may be the most reasonable limit. And G major can be implied by only 2 of the 3 notes. Stability is an important concept here. We will talk of 2 types. Close voiced stability involves placing all 3 notes as close as possible, with a G bass. G

Mistake By The Blog

So after forgetting all about my blog almost immediately after starting it, I figure its about time to get my blog going. So today i'm gonna talk about apples, tuna, my pet fish, Amped 3, and about my hangover. Apples are great, they come in a bunch of different flavours and colours, however grapples (grape punch flavour injected apples) should be taken off the shelves. I strongly believe that grapes should taste like grapes and apples should taste like apples. Although I use an apple computer sometimes I like to eat tuna sandwiches. I don't eat meat, but for some strange reason I still eat fish, the ladies at corkys assume i want a tuna melt every time i go into that restaurant. I go there on a weekly basis but I still have no idea what their names are, and its reached the point where it would be akward to ask. back to tuna. Sometimes girls who don't clean their crotchal region develop the musk of tuna. Although I do eat fish, I feel I justify eating them all by imprisoning one of their kind in a bowl. Reginald is my fish, he's a siamese fighting fish. If you put a mirror by his fishbowl he freaks the fuck out. I need to change his water really bad. Reginald eats 3 pellets a day, and sometimes gets mad and rams his head in the fishbowl. Needless to say he looks really bored, but he's a violent bastard so he can't make friends. Speaking of friends, while I don't hang out with mine I sometimes play video games. My most recent purchase was amped 3. Amped 2 was a fucking kick ass game (minus the god awful soundtrack which included an emo section) but the new one is glitchy as fuck and they got rid of the dual joystick flips so now your guy can barely do some tricks without alot of finesse on the joystick and alot of good luck. I figure its a simple enough game to play hungover so i'm happy. Today I had a wicked hangover. I barely slept last night and slept all day. I was hungoveer until about 7.

Injury Report June 19

Hey guys, gals. Sorry I am a day late. Imagine a concert violinist. They can play the hardest pieces with ease. But, are they a musician? The short answer is no. They are adept and well practiced at memorizing a pattern. Reading hard books does not make you a writer, and playing hard songs does not make you a musician. Creation is the key factor here. Sure Bach made good shit. I don't care if you can play it or not, though. music theory - I was lazy this week, and let this guy do all my shit for me http://www.achordaday.com/ I recommend Anathema. Their early stuff is really good deathdoom. Their later stuff is terrible radio rock. Go figure. I also recommend Trace Bundy. In the boring world of airtapping acoustic guitar, this guy manages to actually make good tunes.

Injury Report 06 10 08

So it seems that the world is collapsing around us. Our world is melting every one and everything is slowly dying of something. But, was it any better before? I have an inkling that air quality was pretty bad during the industrial revolution. Who cares anyway. Stop watching the news. Cannon - Darkthrone. Black metal that knows its campy. Great instrumentation, and possibly some of the best vocals put to wax. Left Field - October File. Not quite metal, not quite hardcore, not quite rock, but very compelling stuff. Theory - Now that we learned scales, we are going to break them down further, into intervals. The major scale is a septatonic scale. It has a perfect 1, major 2, major 3, perfect 4, perfect 5, major 6 and major 7. Changing the quality any intervals, creates a new scale. If we flatten the 7, we get Mixolydian. There are many, many possible combonations of course, some musical, some noisical, but almsot all of them have names and practical aplications. Get busy.

Open Jam @ Black Pirates -> Jun 4, 2008

Another open jam was had at the Black Pirates last night. This time, however, there were very few people in attendance. Nonetheless, the bands Rad Kids and Camden Blues Band played their asses off for the two people who bothered to brave the wind and rain to see some awesome local music. Jay Lindstom also played an amazing acoustic set. Hopefully the turnout will be much better for this Saturday's Pirate Patch Party which is already looking to be one of the best local shows in the history of Thunder Bay.

Injury Report June 4 2008

People. The gents and birds at my school are all excited for prom season to start. I like the idea. Even the normally unified cool crowd split off into their respective cliques, and argue over who goes to what party, sits at what table, and dances with who. After food they can't afford, and dance with someone they hate, they go drink until they can't remember their miserable four year existence. I know a few who really didn't try to do anything productive with their entire early life, and are making it up by spending a fifth year in highschool. I highly doubt that this leads to monetary success. If it didn't work out for you in the first four, surely the isolation and humiliation (and the option to sign out of class) will motivate you towards your goals. You will probably have better luck having sex with grade 9 through 12's . At least better than your friends who are working at post secondary. (obviously some people who come back do benefit from it, just not most) (aaaaand the cool crowd does incude some telerable people, and some great ones too) Music Cannon - I'm going to recomend Dewscented whatever their new album is, its a thrashing good time. Left Field - Ravi Shankar. Indian classical music is very different from western music. It uses microtones, which are pitches not generated in the Sacred/Pop/Classical music most are accostomed to. Theory - Lets start at the beginning. Scales. In music, there are 12 of them (technically 14, but some sound identical). Smoke on the Water (G blues) can be transposed (moved around) into all 12 keys, and still be recognizable. Try to play some of your tunes in different keys, just to get the hang of it. There are two reasons why composers choose a particular key. The first is instrumentation. Sharp keys (E, A, D, G) are easy on guitar. That is why the first chords a beginner guitar player learns are CAGED. Not a flat note in the bunch. Piano's like moderate keys, with not too many sharps or flats (G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb). Wind instruments tend to favour flat keys. Careful key selection can make a piece easy or a unicorn. The other reason is personal taste, some people like the sound (perceived or otherwise) of certain keys. All for now.

Forever Dead Fundraiser @ Kilroys, May 31

Another awesome local show was held at Kilroys this past weekend to support the fundraising needed to print and release Forever Dead's upcoming full-length album. Awesome bands, including Boo Hiss, D.E.A.D., Rad Kids, Camden Blues, Forever Dead and more rocked the hell out of Kilroys, reminding me that there is an extremely vibrant local music that is supportive of each other. Although Black Pirates is quickly becoming the hub for the local music scene, great shows are still happening at Kilroys, The Apollo, Disgraceland and other venues across the city. Check baycore.net for upcoming events in the area.

Open Jam @ Black Pirates -> May 28, 2008

Open jam was an awesome time this week. I haven't seen such a great bar show since the Apollo had weekly wednesday jams. Camden Blues Band, Bottom Rockers and Wayback were all awesome. The Rad Kids had a great time playing. There was also a nu-metal/emo band there that I liked, but didn't catch the name of. And the Morgan/Middaugh Experience was really good. I didn't see the elusive out-of-towners but all of the locals kicked ass. I look forward to many more local open jams at this venue.

So this is my first post of my blog. I don't really know what will come of this, but I hope I write some interesting stuff. I will make music recommendations, some of which are left field, and some which would seem intuitive. I will also be pissed off at something from time to time and endlessly rant in long sentences. Finally, I will include some music theory discussion. Feel free to send your feedback via message to GeneralsGathered.

Mistake By The Lake Blog

I've never really had a blog before so I guess the most logical thing to do is to start things off by introducing myself. I'm Gab, I play Bass in Revenge Of The Mormons and Warmageddon and I used to play guitar in Dishonourable Discharge. I have a radio show called Mistake By The Lake Radio its on every tuesday from midnight until 1 AM on CILU 102.7 FM or www.luradio.ca. I've been a part of the Thunder Bay music scene for a few years now. I will be mainly using this blog to announce things related to my bands aswell as writing some reviews of shows i've been to.

Derelict and Eviction Party at Black Pirates Pub - May 24th, 2008

Eviction Party from Guelph, Ontario and Derelict from Montreal, Quebec played the first ever metal show at the Black Pirates Pub in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Pub is Thunder Bay's newest music venue, aiming to showcase a variety of music styles. Opening up the show, D.E.A.D., Bloodpool and Jagstog put in excellent performances followed by the technicality of Derelict and the out-of-the-ordinary punk of Eviction Party. With many more scheduled upcoming punk and metal shows at the Black Pirates Pub, the summer is looking to be one filled with great concerts. Check baycore.net and tbshows.com for all info about upcoming shows at the Black Pirates Pub.

Dr.Benway & Haggard on the Rock Pile @ Disgraceland, May 23, 2008

Although the out-of-town bands didn't show up, a great night was had with locals Trench Foot, Bottom Rockers and The Rad Kids performing for a crowd of rowdy partiers.
